Article history: Received 13 June 2012 Received in revised form 1 June 2013 Accepted 15 June 2013 Available online 17 July 2013 The effect of the different hygrothermal conditions on the shear strength degradation of ACA joints and the difference among them are studied in this paper using experiments and numerical simulations. First of all, several hygrothermal aging tests with different accelerating levels are carried out to explore the hygrothermal environment induced degradation paths of interfacial strength of ACA joints. It is found that the shear strength degradation paths differ from each other when the ACA joints are tested under different hygrothermal conditions, while they are similar to each other. For each case, the shear strength firstly decreases rapidly and then slowly approximates to a fixed value, and the shear strength difference between each other goes to an approximate constant after certain early test hours. After that, to understand the degradation mechanism better, finite element modeling is achieved to study the relationship of moisture concentration in ACA layer and shear strength of the ACA joints, and it is found that moisture saturation and diffusion rate are considered to be the main causes of the shear strength degradation. 2013 Elsevier Ltd. A Shear Strength Degradation Model for Anisotropic Conductive Adhesive Joints Under Hygrothermal Conditions

Hygrothermal environments can degrade anisotropic conductive adhesive (ACA) joints by weakening the shear strength of adhesive interface. In this paper, the shear strength degradation model of ACA joints under hygrothermal conditions was formulated through experimental testing and theoretical modeling. The shear strength degradation data were obtained from different hygrothermal aging tests and...

Environmental Effects on Mechanical Properties of Glass/Epoxy and Fiber Metal Laminates, Part I: Hygrothermal Aging

In this article, the effect of hygrothermal aging on mechanical properties of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) and E-glass/epoxy (GE) composites is investigated. First, FML and GE specimens were built using wet lay-up technique under vacuum pressure. Hygrothermal aging simulation was then carried out on both specimen types in distilled water at a constant temperature of 90 °C for 5 weeks. The resul...

Effect of silica particles on adhesion strength of polyvinyl chloride coatings on metal substrates

The aim of this study was to improve the adhesion performance of plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coatings on steel substrates by using nanoparticles. For this purpose, the PVC plastisol with different concentration of nano-silica was prepared and applied to bond steel joints. The adhesive strength of the joints was determined by single-lap shear test. Moreover, mechanical properties and mi...

Influence of artificial aging on the shear bond strength of zirconia-composite interfaces after pretreatment with new 10-MDP adhesive systems

Introduction: This in-vitro study investigates the bond strength of different zirconia composites  with three different modern adhesive systems after artificial aging using thermocycling and water storage. Methods: A total of 90 specimens of zirconia (InCoris, Sirona, Germany, Bernsheim) were ground using a 165 µm grit rotating diamond disc. Thirty specimens were additionally treated with eithe...
